Author Guidelines
Anthropology and Humanism, the journal of the Society for Humanistic Anthropology, is the voice of humanistic science. In this capacity, AH accepts articles from anthropologists who concern themselves with the central question of the discipline: what it is to be human. Believing that such an issue must be addressed both holistically and by the whole discipline, we welcome contributions from all major fields of anthropology. We also welcome articles from scholars in other disciplines, in the humanities as well as in the sciences.
Among the types of submissions AH especially values are (1) those that explore the relationship between humanistic anthropology and other anthropological currents, (2) those that bring to the fore trends in the humanities that may further humanistic anthropology, and (3) those that bring out the intricate and contradictory processes of life in cultural context—including those of the anthropologist.
In the treatment of the above themes, AH particularly solicits essays, fiction, poems, graphics, and photographs. The length of essays and fiction should not exceed 8000 words, inclusive of References. Up to 5 poems may be submitted as a single submission of no more than 10 pages. Both essays and fiction should have a short summary of up to 200 words. Poetry should include an Ethnographic Statement, up to 400 words, after the poem(s).
Submit manuscripts electronically to the editor at the website listed below. Manuscripts must be doublespaced, including quotations and excerpts, notes, references, tables, and figure captions. Position the notes at the end and the list of references after the notes. Margins throughout the manuscript (top, bottom, and both sides) must be one inch, and the right margin should not be justified. Include as separate sections beginning on new pages a title page, with complete title, the author(s) name and affiliation; the summary with five keywords; the article text; notes; references; and figure captions, in that order. All pages of the manuscript should be numbered consecutively.
Free format submission
A&H now offers Free Format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.
Before you submit, you will need:
- Your manuscript: this should be an editable file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files—whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including summary, key words, body, notes, references, and (in the case of poetry) an ethnographic statement. Figures and tables should have legends. Figures should be uploaded in the highest resolution possible. If the figures are not of sufficiently high quality your manuscript may be delayed. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. Supporting information should be submitted in separate files. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers, and the editorial office will send it back to you for revision. Your manuscript may also be sent back to you for revision if the quality of English language is poor.
- An ORCID ID, freely available at https://orcid.org. (Why is this important? Your article, if accepted and published, will be attached to your ORCID profile. Institutions and funders are increasingly requiring authors to have ORCID IDs.)
- The title page of the manuscript, including:
- Your co-author details, including affiliation and email address. (Why is this important? We need to keep all co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)
- Statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies, which may include any of the following (Why are these important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for the research we consider for publication):
- data availability statement
- funding statement
- conflict of interest disclosure
- ethics approval statement
- patient consent statement
- permission to reproduce material from other sources
- clinical trial registration
Important: the journal operates a double-blind peer review policy. Please anonymize your manuscript and supply a separate title page file.
References. All entries in the reference list must be cited in the text and vice versa.
Figures. Artwork for figures should be sent electronically.
